EEOC Issues 2016 Statistics

On January 18, 2017, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission released detailed statistical data of the charges received by the agency in fiscal year 2016. The EEOC received 91,503 charges of workplace discrimination in 2016. Retaliation charges made up the biggest percentage of charges filed - 45.9% - followed by race (35.3%), disability (30.7%), sex (29.4%), age (22.8%), national origin (10.8%), religion (4.2%), color (3.4%), and equal pay (1.2%). This is the first year that the EEOC has included detailed information about LGBT charges in its year-end summary; although these charges are on the rise, they made up only 0.018% of all charges filed.

The EEOC's website provides further statistical breakdowns, including data that details the types of charges filed in each state. Interestingly, the states with the most charges filed in 2016 were Texas and Florida. To view this data, click here.
